Keele University

Keele University is one of the UK’s new breed of universities, being created in 1949 and gaining university status in 1962. The campus is located in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside and offers a wide range of high quality courses.

Shepherd Gilmour has worked with Keele University for over 10 years on a large variety of projects which has seen investment of £115m by the university in buildings and infrastructure. This work has included feasibility studies, structural surveys to large scale remodelling and refurbishment work to existing building and new build projects across the campus.

Recent projects have included the Dorothy Hodgkin Building which involved remodelling and re?cladding of the existing teaching block along with remodelling the Exhibition space within the Vice Chancellors Building.

The Hornbeam Building project involved the re?cladding, remodelling, demolition and extension to the main entrance to modernise the building. We undertook an initial feasibility study to enable costings and viability parameter to be established.

The works comprise remodelling the original precast ‘Orlit’ construction along with other areas of precast concrete framing. A green roof system is used as an external patio area to the student’s common rooms.
