Crowne Plaza Hotel, Shudehill, Manchester

This prestigious 4 star hotel is an eleven storey building and is located on the old Smithfield’s Market Site in the Northern Quarter of Manchester City Centre. The hotel contains 228 bedrooms as well as Conference Rooms, Bar, Restaurant and Fitness Suite.

The structural design was challenging due to the change from modular bedrooms to open plan together with a very high service demand. This was overcome by the introduction of a steel transfer structure at first floor level consisting of deep plate girders with large openings. The transfer structure consisted of a composite concrete and metal deck solution with supporting Fabsec beams to minimise the combined structural ceiling service zone.

The building has two main components – a two-storey podium/transfer structure and an eight-storey precast concrete bedroom structure over. Precast concrete construction was used for the construction of the bedroom areas.  This construction has inherent stability, provided by the cross walls. The piled foundation solution utilised CFA piles take into the underlying stiff clay and bedrock.
